Welcome to Belfast Royal Academy. Belfast Royal Academy is the oldest school in the city and was founded by Rev Dr James Crombie in as Belfast Academy, in Academy Street. Dr Crombie was clearly a man of vision who set the ambitious target of establishing a new school “ provide an education of high standard”.

Belfast Royal Academy staff dressed up as a variety of book characters to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7th March. Students were delighted to see their favourite literary heroes, including James Bond, Jay Gatsby, Lady Macbeth and many more. The prizes included books, Easter Eggs, stationery and confectionery.

A week long scavenger hunt also took place to help celebrate World Book Day at the Academy, giving pupils a chance to win exciting prizes whilst developing their knowledge of books. 27 pictures of literary characters were hidden throughout the school.

The recent Scholastic Book Fairs have been a great success, resulting in over £ in free books for the school library. This boosts our Junior Fiction area, and enables more choice for our pupils to supplement the Accelerated Reader programme for KS3 and reading for pleasure.

A beautiful sunny morning provided the backdrop of the NI Book Award finale at Campbell College on Tuesday 26th June. The hall was filled with pupils from schools across Northern Ireland and the sense of excitement was palpable, not least because the visiting author was none other than Belfast’s own Kelly McCaughrain, author of ‘Flying Tips for Flightless Birds’.

The pupil who has studied English at Belfast Royal Academy should leave the School with a love of reading, an appreciation of literature, a keen critical insight and a well-developed ability to communicate, both orally and in writing.
